The Lady 'Canes are in the thick of the A division race, with a 5-2 league record heading into the stretch run. Two victories over arch-rival St. Regis, and a double-header sweep of Marist Academy on May 3rd have highlighted a successful season thus far. The Varsity squad has battled hard through injuries, and have represented the Green & Gold with pride and gutsy play.
From Saturday 4/26:
In its best offensive showing of the year, Holy Name JV#1 beat Everest Academy 20-8 to move to a 3-0 record and the top of the league standings. All 13 players reached based in the offensive effort, with the Hurricanes being stopped by the maximum "7-run per inning" in two innings.
11 players scored for the Hurricanes, including Christina O'Keefe (2 runs), Emily Richards, Clare McGough (2 runs), Jillian Sollumn (on base 4 times), Mia Deighan (2 runs), Erin Kavanaugh, Clare Nienstedt, Cali Cosgrove (HR and on base 4 times), Tatyanna Dadabbo (Grandslam HR), Brigid Johnson (on base 4 times), and Hannah Pickens (3 runs and on base 4 times).
On the defensive side, Hannah Pickens made a strong throw to the plate to thwart an Everest late-inning rally. Clare McGough pitched two strong innings of relief to close out the victory and earn the "save" for the 1st place Hurricanes.
From Sunday 4/27:
In the "Battle for Birmingham" and sole possession of first place, the 3-0 JV#1 Hurricanes made the short journey down Lahser to face the 3-0 St. Regis Red Raiders. The Holy Name "crowd" was not dissappointed by the best game of the young season.
The Raiders scored two runs in the 1st to take a lead, and held the lead for 3 innings with impeccable defense by their excellent 2nd and 3rd basewomen. In the Holy Name 4th, Christina O'Keefe started the rally with a walk, and Hannah Pickens singled to centerfield. Tatyanna Dadabbo hit a 3-run HR sliding into the plate to give the Hurricanes at 3-2 lead. Cali Cosgrove and Kelly Cole continued the rally with walks, and Hannah Diehl, after fouling off 5 strikes, blasted a double to center field to score 2 runs and give the Hurricanes a 5-2 lead. The Hurricanes added to their lead in the 6th on a walk by Hannah Pickens (reaching base for the 8th straight time in 3 games), and a 2-run HR by Tatyanna Dadabbo, making the lead 7-2.
The Raiders added 3 in the 6th, cutting the lead to 7-5. In the bottom of the seventh, Erin Kavanaugh stole a base hit on a Red Raider pop-up, Hannah Diehl made a strong play at shortstop to "gun down" the Raiders 2nd hitter, and Mia Deighan, in the defensive play of the year, stole an extra-base hit from the Red Raiders, with a fine play on a fly ball to right center fields, to put the Raiders down in a 1-2-3 defensive effort.
Next game: Saturday May 10th @ Holy Family
JV 2 Softball:
Down 11 - 4 at the top of half of the final frame of their game against
St. Patrick's at Keith Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon in West
Bloomfield, Holy Name's JV II softball team made a game of it by scoring
6 runs in the top half of the seventh. With basis loaded and two
outs, Heather Lee (RF) lined a grounder to the left of pitcher,
who scooped up the ball and threw it home beating Kristina Udell's (2B)
effort to score from third. Holy Name falls to 2-2, while St. Pat's
protected their unbeaten record and stand at 4-0. Marta Colosimo (SS) was
on base four times as the Hurricane's lead-off hitter going 3 for 3
plus a walk. Defensively, Kara Callaghan shined defensively at third
base in the second inning throwing out the first two hitters, and just
missed getting her third assist in the inning with the third batter.
Stacia Bokos closed out the inning with one of her 5 strike outs in the
five innings she pitched. She gave up two
base on balls and only six hits.
Next games: Heading for a road tilt vs. St. Joseph of Lake Orion on Saturday May 10th, and back home for a Noon contest against Holy Family regional on Sunday the 11th at Poppelton Park.
